Civil War reenactment at Tomlinson Run Park

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. - Today through Sunday, G Company 27th Virginia Infantry of the famed Stonewall Brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia will be at Tomlinson Run Park, near the main entrance to the park on state Route 8. The company will be camped next to the pool.
Every year the company puts on a living history along with the Buckskinners at the park. There will be a period Confederate Army camp complete with weapons, equipment tents and other equipment. The men will do various drills, including bayonet training, maneuvering as a unit, manual of arms and firing techniques. Visitors can observe the men as they prepare their meals and play a game of period correct croquette, and stroll through the camp, looking in any tent with the flaps open to ask questions, take photos and request demonstrations on certain equipment and weapons.
The 27th Virginia, also known as the Shriver Grays, was formed in Wheeling (then Virginia) in 1861 by Daniel Shriver, who became its first company commander and later became the 27th regimental commander.
Daniel Schreiber was wounded during the war and died of his wounds shortly after the war. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, where the company performs a ceremony every year on Memorial Day, firing a 21-gun salute and laying a flag folded at the head of his tombstone. Many men in the company are also buried there.
The company was the most northern Confederate unit during the war; many of the men in this reenacting company are descendants of those men. This company is steep in history to the area, fighting in every major battle of the Civil War from Bull Run to Appomattox.
During reenacting battles the company has traveled and participated in anniversaries at Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania, first and second Manassas and various West Virginia battles at the very first Battle of the War in Philippi, West Virginia, Bulltown and a living history at Weston, West Virginia, at the "Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum," as well as locally at Beaver Creek.
