After two tireless years, Maggie Cook, 18, community leader and volunteer with Ohio Organizing Collaborative (OOC), was recently recognized for her accomplishments at the Center for Popular Democracy's (CPD) People's Convention 2019 in Detroit.
Cook was acknowledged, amongst organizers from around the country, for her outstanding work as a youth leader in Ohio.
Cook began her work with OOC in 2017, organizing small towns around the effects of mass incarceration and environmental destruction in her hometown of East Liverpool. After witnessing her community struggle with poverty, racial injustice, drug-use and a broken criminal justice system, Cook played an integral role in getting Issue 1 - a constitutional amendment to decriminalize drug-use and relocate state funds to rehabilitation and re-entry resources - on Ohio's 2018 ballot.
Cook is also a senior founding member of UnHarming Ohio - Ohio's Drug War Survivor's Union. Her dedication has helped UnHarming Ohio become active in 13 different counties across the state.
The People's Convention sought to bring together over 1,700 grassroots leaders, organizers, elected officials, movement artists and leading national progressive voices for two days of transformative learning, action and collective power-building, according to the CPD's vision.
