EAST LIVERPOOL -- While the majority of business owners aim to get the most from their employees, Ray Trevelline asks "How can I give my employees the best opportunity?"
This question led the Hot Dog Shoppe to partner with East Liverpool-based training company Mainstream Leadership Network (MLN) to teach employees successful life and leadership skills, benefitting them beyond their employment at the fast food restaurant.
"This isn't a destination job," said Trevelline. "This is a stepping stone."
The partnership with MLN includes a training program kicking off July 13 with a six-session motivational class on character development for all employees. In addition to the group training, the partnership includes individual business and life coaching for management.
"The Hot Dog Shoppe is a staple in the city of East Liverpool," said Michael Ross, president of MLN. "It represents stability in a city where many businesses come and go, the Hot Dog Shoppe has remained through adversity. We want to do whatever we can to ensure that it remains for at least another 55 years."
Trevelline's business philosophy of serving others isn't just about selling hot dogs. He hopes the partnership with MLN will work to create a more "community-minded" workforce. He often compares employment at the Hot Dog Shoppe to an orange.
"To get the juice out of an orange you have to squeeze," he says.
The Hot Dog Shoppe is the first job for many of Trevelline's new hires and he teaches them to "squeeze" the most out the opportunity, learning everything they can from the job to benefit future endeavors. When asked what Trevelline hopes to receive by partnering with MLN, he said, "We are looking at growth and development of every single person who works there. We want the experience to be a benefit all through their lives."
The two East Liverpool-based companies collaborate on the idea of the partnership cultivating long-term benefits.
"We can partner with Ray in his ideals that each person who works at the Hot Dog Shoppe can have a better future through what they learn working there," said Ross. "We will add to that through our program."
