DAYTON – An East Liverpool native recently was awarded his 18th US Patent.
on May 31, US Patent No. 9,353462 (Fiber Blends) was granted to Paul M. (Mel) Standley, and assigned to Finite Fiber, an Akron-based producer of precision cut fibers and a subsidiary of Dowco LLC, also an Akron-based company.
The patent deals with novel custom pre-blends of aramide (Kevlar) fibers of various particle sizes and surface roughness characteristics (fibrillation), carbon fibers, and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethane – Teflon) fibers in various proportions that may be combined with other selected materials (antistatic agents, partitioning agents) and materials that enhance flowability and prevent fiber clumping during the processing of the fiber pre-blends. Such fibers are used to reinforce rubber and plastic parts used in a variety of industries.
Standley, an East Liverpool native, is the son of the late Paul W. and Ruth Barnhart Standley. A 1961 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Standley also is a 1970 graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry.
Standley’s career mainly has included working with rubber and plastic compositions in mostly a research capacity for several companies (General Tire and Dayco). Upon retirement from Dayco in 1996 (as VP and R&D), Standley formed his own consulting company (Zephyr Associates Ltd. of Dayton) and has worked with many companies, such as Finite Fiber, throughout the years.
