HAMMONDSVILLE – Classroom supplies are generally dwindling this time of year, but some teachers at Stanton Elementary are replenishing their shelves after receiving a recent contribution.
For the second year in a row, TCC Verizon Wireless in Wintersville donated 10 boxes of school supplies to teachers in grades PreK-2 as a show of appreciation for their hard work.
The “Teachers Rock!” program is conducted at stores across the country and provides an array of pens, pencils, paper, glue sticks, and other implements to keep the classrooms stocked. Greg Carder, manager of the Wintersville location, said it helps teachers help their students.
“‘Culture of Good’ is the name of the program our company started, and the first quarter of the year is ‘Teachers Rock!’ We donate $250 per box of school supplies, and its stuff that teachers would need,” Carder said, adding that it saves educators from paying for goods out of their own pocket. “We pick 10 teachers per store and try to reach out to them with a box of goodies to show that they matter.”
He added that his company also assists students with a book bag giveaway each August. Each store distributes 400-500 book bags full of supplies for one day, and with four stores in the region that totals about 1,600 book bags.
Items inside include folders, rulers, pencils, and erasers and it saves students some money on purchasing school supplies for their upcoming year.
Meanwhile, Stanton Elementary Principal Julie Kireta said the teachers’ donations were very much appreciated.
“We go through a lot of supplies throughout the year, so it’s nice to have extras handy when the kids start to run out,” she said.
