Natural gas is the bedrock of Ohio’s energy future

Dear editor, Ohio is facing an unprecedented surge in energy demand, and as our state grows, the pressure on our electrical grid intensifies. It is critical that we rely on proven and affordable power sources to keep our communities safe and our economy moving. We cannot afford to gamble on intermittent energy, and natural gas plays a key role in ensuring our grid remains strong. Unlike other sources that fluctuate with the weather, natural gas provides the “baseload” power necessary to ensure our grid remains stable. This stability is what keeps energy reliable and affordable ...

Appreciation for a controlled burn

Big thank you to the Salineville Fire Department for handling the controlled burn on our property (recently). The house had been abandoned for years and had turned into a real eyesore, so seeing it finally taken care of — and in a way that benefits training and the community. It’s not every day you watch a house go up in flames on purpose, but knowing it was done safely, professionally, and for a good cause made all the difference. We truly appreciate the time, coordination, and hard work that went into making sure everything went smoothly. Grateful to have a department like ...

How are things on the farm?

The best answer I can give is, “busy.” My sister Col. Peggy attends Rotary Club meetings early Tuesday mornings in Weirton. She said her Rotary friends often ask her, “How are things on the farm?” She thought it was worth an answer, and deputized me to deliver that answer, so a week from now I’ll be trying to do so in the space of 20 minutes, which I know, being a former Rotarian myself, is about all the time I’ll get. I sat down to outline my speech and immediately saw problems. If I begin with the Miller family history on this farm, and tell how 3X Great-grandfather ...

Live every day like it is Easter — with love and compassion

For Christians, Sunday is the holiest day of the year — Easter. It is a day of celebration; commemorating the resurrection of the Son. For millennia, this season has also been a time to celebrate the return of the sun, when our minds are on a kind of rebirth and living again in the light. Easter brings us joy, yes. It also teaches us about sacrifice and love; and gives us a brightly colored reminder that we are supposed to love one another, too. For many, it is a day of dressing up, perhaps attending church, having a meal with family and then giving in to modern traditions ...

Ohio, West Virginia falling behind in the innovation race

Residents of this region pride themselves on a pioneering spirit that has spread across generations of those who helped fuel and build this country. But these days, we’re falling behind as others have picked up the torch. In fact, according to WalletHub’s “Most and Least Innovative States (2026),” Ohio ranks 40th in the country, and West Virginia ranks a predictable 49th. According to the study, the most innovative places are Washington, D.C., Massachusetts and California. Those measures are based on data points such as the share of STEM professionals, research and ...

Rulli foe’s ballot wins heighten her profile for voters

Jullie Kelley, the lone Republican challenging U.S. Rep. Michael Rulli in the GOP primary for the latter’s congressional seat, has two victories over the incumbent’s campaign in the past few weeks. But wins in front of the Stark County Board of Elections and the Ohio Supreme Court to remain on the ballot is unlikely to translate into success for Kelley during the May 5 Republican primary. It’s understandable that Rulli of Salem, a congressman since winning a special June 2024 election for the 6th District seat, would want to avoid a Republican primary though realistically his ...
