Shout out to rally organizer

To the editor: I’m writing to give a shout out to 17- year- old Lena Rohr, East Liverpool, for organizing a great Pro Choice Rally July 10 in Lisbon. I’m also writing to set straight the number of people who attended the event as reported by local news stations. There were about 200 people of all ages in favor of abortion access, while at any one time the most anti-choice protesters had was 30 people, of gray-haired age. These numbers reflect the same percentages found statewide- that 70 % of Ohioans across the board, support reproductive health care for families, including ...

Support for all of the hard-working nurses

To the editor: The U.S. health care system is largely dependent on the support of travel nurses to survive. Whether it comes to hospitals, clinics, or other care facilities, travel nurses help maintain the health and safety of patients and facilities by adding a much-needed layer of support. For decades, nurses have struggled with long hours, high stress, and minimal pay and overtime. Our hospitals, patients, and the profession as a whole have suffered because of it. The physical and emotional exhaustion of nurses’ jobs have left the industry short staffed. Even before the ...

Strengthening buy America in Ohio

To the editor: America’s Great Lakes states are known for manufacturing. Mighty Ohio manufactures steel to electronic chips. 84.65 percent of Ohio’s manufacturers have under 100 employees, but equal 42.3 percent of Ohio’s manufacturing workforce, according to SBA’s Office of Advocacy. Though small, they fuel America’s pandemic recovery, and under President Biden, also our nation’s lowest unemployment since 1970. To strengthen American manufacturing, the Biden-Harris Administration has launched a whole-of-government initiative to enhance federal procurement and other ...

Humane Agent offers insight into year one

To the editor: Having recently passed the one year mark as the appointed Humane Agent for Columbiana County, I felt I should take a look back. It was a crazy year of learning and growing for myself and the Humane Society as a whole. Being born and raised in Columbiana County, I knew the need for an animal cruelty investigator in our area, which has been underserved for a very long time, so when the position was offered to me, I jumped at the chance. Since my official appointment a little over a year ago, we have taken in 542 animals as part of animal cruelty investigations. Not all ...

East Liverpool needs a ‘house cleaning’

To the editor: To my East Liverpool friends and classmates: whenever we are going to have company, as our mothers taught us, we need to clean our house to get ready. Lou Holtz is probably the most famous of our visitors and on May 21, 2022, a bronze bust of him was unveiled at the East Liverpool High School, along with a barbeque dinner in the cafeteria. Five were inducted into the Hall of Fame: Hans Dietz, Robert Herrington, Dru Joyce, Mike Turk and Bob Duffy. It would be nice if we could house clean our little pottery town. Maybe some high school students could clean the Broadway ...

Timing is critical for slowing Russia’s effort

German officials made a surprising announcement in the wake of what has been described as “energy blackmail” by Russia. According to Economy and Climate Minister Robert Habeck, the country believes it can be independent of Russian fossil fuels by the end of the summer. It already has reduced the share of Russian energy imports to 12% for oil, 8% for coal and 35% for natural gas. But there is a big “if” in Germany’s plans. “All these steps that we are taking require an enormous joint effort from all actors and they also mean costs that are felt by both the economy and ...
