Cut the military budget

To the editor: Ohio Peace Council statement on debt deal cuts. Along strict partisan lines, the US House recently passed a draconian bill euphemistically called the “Limit, Save, and Grow Act,” which essentially is a declaration of war on America’s poor. Proposed are massive cuts in countless domestic programs badly needed by low-income Americans for survival. Though unlikely to survive in the US Senate, this legislative assault upon America’s most vulnerable populations sets the sinister tone for negotiations on the nation’s debt ceiling. Missing in those negotiations is ...

Port Authority draws praise

To the editor: In these trying economic times it is comforting to see our county’s Port Authority striving to assist local businesses in assuring they will remain competitive in our regional and national markets by recently awarding Maritime Assistance Grants totaling $1.6 million to two riverfront companies to extend their docks and erect new storage buildings. Over the past few years, I have taken notice of the myriad ways Port Authority CEO Penny Traina, her open-minded board of directors and their support staff have found creative ways to support our local businesses therefore ...

Not a big fan of Norfolk Southern

To the editor: Norfolk Southern or East Palestine? I don’t know who I feel more sorry for! NFS or EP? NS has spent a lot of money in EP for wrecking its damaged train in our village and we have spend a lot of money trying to fix up our dirty belongings. Neither one of us would be spending money if one of us had done the right thing! The things you have done to fix up your mistake may be good for some people, but not good enough for most people. Your latest ploy is to give us the old train station that NS left run down to make a huge eyesore in our town! I honestly think your ...

Applauds process used by trustees, commissioners

To the editor: I firmly believe in a landowner’s right to make decisions for their own property until those decisions lower their neighbor’s property values, destroy their neighbor’s quality of life and ability to sell their property if desired. The current process that the township trustees and the county commissioners are using to restrict or approve windmills and solar projects in townships protects landowner rights and citizens of our community, and I applaud them for their actions. The previous process to allow windmills was held at the statehouse in Columbus and ...

Norfolk Southern should be buying residential properties

To the editor: It is a common understanding in the retail industry that “if you break it, you buy it.” That same principle applies to a community destroyed by a reckless corporation as well as a community broken by a careless customer. The overdue bill owed by Norfolk Southern for its wanton destruction of East Palestine is a hefty one that far exceeds the $387 million claimed lost in its 1st Quarter Report on the “Eastern Ohio Incident.” However, not a dollar has been paid so far to directly compensate property owners for their colossal loss of value. Making matters worse is ...

A big ‘thank you’ from an East Palestine resident

To the editor: This letter again is about the February 3rd train accident in East Palestine although it might be slightly different than some others. My family has lived in East Palestine for a long time and I chose to raise my children here after living away during their early years because of the sense of community and family. I want to say thank you to all who have been involved in this tragic event from the beginning. Thank you so much to ALL the first responders who came to help the night it happened not knowing what they were responding to. Thank you to the ones who worked ...
