LISBON -- Columbiana County Municipal Court Judge Tim McNicol announced his intention to file his candidacy to retain his judgeship in this year's upcoming election.
McNicol was appointed by Gov. John Kasich in February of 2018 to fill the unexpired term of Judge Charles C. Amato, who resigned for personal reasons. McNicol was sworn in on March 7, 2018.
Prior to appointment, McNicol had extensive trial experience as an assistant prosecutor, Mayor's Court Magistrate, and municipal attorney in Columbiana County. He has served many communities as either a magistrate or legal counsel including Lisbon, Salineville, Wellsville, Rogers and East Liverpool.
"As judge I have drawn on my extensive background in both criminal and municipal law to fairly and effectively perform all judicial duties," McNicol said.
While working as an assistant prosecutor, McNicol was entrusted with the prosecution of all sexual assault and felony child abuse cases in the county since 1995. These cases included some of the worse offenses seen by our courts, including rape and homicide.
"Judge McNicol is eminently qualified for this position and has been doing an excellent job since appointed. He will have my complete support as well as that of my staff," county Prosecutor Robert Herron said in a released statement.
Since becoming Judge, McNicol has presided over Columbiana County's first and only drug court, recently achieving specialized docket certification in December. Along with Judge Mark Frost, McNicol oversees the Municipal Court Probation Department whose efforts resulted in the completion of more than 30,000 community service hours in 2018 for various governmental as well as non-profit charitable organizations.
McNicol thanked Judge Frost for his help and guidance throughout his first year in office. Frost will not be able to run for re-election for his current position on the bench.
"Judge Frost's contributions and service to this county's legal system cannot be overstated. He will be greatly missed," McNicol said.
Judge McNicol resides in Wellsville with his wife of more than 18 years, Maria, who is a teacher and coach in the Wellsville Local School District. They have two daughters, Jenna and Emily.
