BOE approves personnel matters

NEW CUMBERLAND — More coaching assignments for spring sports, additional substitutes and a new teacher for next school year were among the personnel matters approved during Monday’s Hancock County Board of Education meeting.

The board approved six coaching assignments, consisting of five for Oak Glen High School–softball assistant coach Erin Shuman, boys track assistants Chris Hill and Joshua Weltner, and non-paid girls track coaches Jeremy Krzys and Jordan Mitchell–and Weir High School baseball assistant Michael Shockley.

Regarding classroom assignments, the board approved the hiring of Ashley Bell, who will serve as a fourth grade teacher at Weirton Elementary starting in the 2018-2019 school year. Bell holds a Bachelors degree and comes to Weirton Elementary with two years teaching experience.

The board also approved eight substitutes, including substitute bus drivers Raylena M. Givens and Kaylie Ferguson, and substitute cooks Catina Lamp, Nancy Pearson, Sherry Chapman, Melissa Parmenter, Amy McKitrick and Bobby Jo Thorn The bus drivers’ hirings are pending favorable state certification test results, while the cooks’ hirings are pending favorable state mandated test and fingerprint results.

The board, meanwhile, approved the resignations of Weirton Elementary teacher Daniella Mauro, John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center teacher Timothy Egyud, central kitchen cook Vicki Jo Heacock and bus operator Lawrence Shane.

Mauro and Egyud will both be relocating, with Mauro’s resignation effective March 5 and Egyud’s on June 30. Heacock stepped down due to personal reasons effective April 4, and Shane submitted his retirement request, with his career to wrap up on June 30.

In other business:

— The board approved its agreement with the West Virginia University Cooperative Extension Services and the county extension service for the 2018-2019 school year. Also, related to the extension office, the board approved permission for the 4-H Camp to use bus transportation July 18-21 to transport campers from the Tomlinson Run State Park Group Camp to the park’s pool. The WVU Extension will pay for this service.

— The board approved an overnight field trip for the Oak Glen varsity softball team to Morgantown, W.Va. for April 20-21.

Four special meetings will be held next week on Monday, April 16 and Tuesday, April 17. Monday’s meeting will be a work session to cover FS/LSIC reports for south of the county, with that meeting starting at 5 p.m. The April 17 meetings will consist of approval of levy rates at 4:45 p.m., a public hearing on the calendar at 5 p.m., and a work session for FS/LSIC reports for north of the county at 5:30 p.m.

The next regular meeting will be at 5 p.m. April 23. All five meetings listed will be at the John D. Rockefeller Career Center.
