12 firefighter candidates move forward in testing

EAST LIVERPOOL -- A dozen candidates out of 19 who took a recent firefighters' Civil Service exam passed and now will face the grueling agility test on Sept. 27.

Originally, 25 signed up to take the test, just 19 showing up, and this week Civil Service Commission secretary Jane Miller said 12 had passed, with one female among them.

The agility tests will be held at Central Station, where candidates will perform a number of maneuvers designed to determine their physical abilities, such as carrying and rolling fire hose, dragging a life-sized mannequin across the floor, going up and down steep stairs while carrying equipment, scaling the aerial and more.

Chief Bill Jones expects to hire three firefighters from this list, two to replace retirees and one to replace a recent hire whose resignation was accepted at the recent Civil Service Commission meeting.

Commission members said the resignation of firefighter Timothy Grantz was based on not being able to meet the residency requirement for firefighters.

In other matters at the recent commission meeting, members accepted the retirement of street department employee Henry Esken, effective Aug. 1, and the resignation of street department maintenance worker James Witherow, effective Aug. 4.

Also, commission member John Fisher has resigned, with a replacement not yet appointed by Mayor Ryan Stovall. Anyone interested in the position can send or drop off a letter of interest and resume to the mayor's office.

Permanent appointments in the refuse and recycling department approved by the commission included those of laborers Patrick McMain, Chad Bryant and Thomas Edgell, at a salary of $10.76 per hour.

Transfer appointments made were: Arthur Talbert Jr. from water to street department, effective July 31 at $16.14 per hour; John Miscuk, refuse laborer to street maintenance, effective Aug. 14, $14.88 per hour; Nathaniel Ketchum, refuse laborer to water assistant maintenance, Aug. 14, $14.37 per hour; Randy Smith, water heavy equipment to street maintenance, Aug. 14, $16.14 per hour; Gary Hughes, refuse laborer to water assistant maintenance, July 31, $15.04 per hour; Brad Santarelli, refuse laborer to water assistant maintenance, July 31, $15.74 per hour; and Robert Hill, refuse laborer to water assistant maintenance, Aug. 21, $14.37 per hour.
