WELLSVILLE -- School district officials clarified this week questions about the time frame for completion of a roof and air conditioning project at Garfield Elementary.
During Monday's Board of Education meeting, board vice president Tom Brophey discussed the Lincoln Avenue school's project, which the board approved, this summer, a contract for design services with the Buehrer Group Architecture and Engineering at a cost of around $82,000.
That group will handle architecture and design of the replacement roof and installation of the HVAC unit for heating, cooling and air conditioning -- a project with an estimated price tag of $1.1 million.
Brophey said he spoke with some residents, who reportedly were under the impression the project would have been completed by now, but Superintendent Richard Bereschik said no time frame was ever provided regarding completion.
"I don't know why anyone was under that impression it would be completed this year," Bereschik said. "This will be completed for the next school year."
Bereschik said he spoke with contractor Jim Price, along with Kent Buehrer from the Buehrer Group, who said design engineers will visit the school to get exact measurements, and then will return to the district and provide quotes and blueprints to see what is best for the school.
"When we decide that we have to do a heating and cooling system, there is no safe way to do that with children in the building, and it's not a process that, last May, we said we were going to go ahead with this and get an architectural firm and then it can be done that summer," Bereschik said. "That street basically in front of Garfield is going to be closed. You're going to have to bring a crane in. It's a complete safety issue, and anyone that had a question could have called me."
Bereschik said that the system is anticipated to be completed by the 2018-19 school year.
