On to the next round

WHEELING, W.Va. — Several area wrestlers advanced to the second championship round of the 71st annual Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament by first round win or by the way of a bye on Thursday at Wesbanco Arena.

For Beaver Local, Justuce Fisher (106), Jeryck Boyd (113), Josh Burkett (120), Leo Wilkes (132), Bobby Buchheit (138), Chris Warrick (144), Jake Hughes (150), Braedon Landfried (157), Evan Ours (165), Aiden Price (175), Kane Curran (215) and Isaac Prescott (285) all moved on to today’s second championship round. Beaver Local has an early lead in the Class 4A team standings as well.

For East Liverpool, Kyle Ingram (106), Tristan Eckles (120), Wyatt McCune (126), Jayden Shaw (157), Damon Stansbury (165), Xavier Lara (175) and Peyton Shaw (190) all advanced.

Oak Glen’s advancers included Jordan Tomsic (106), Aiden Anderson (113), Maddox Bowen (126), Wyatt Wolanski (132), Logan Graham (138), Hayden Lamb (144), Greg Sauers (190), Richie Gudino (215) and Noah Schmidt (285).

Southern Local had Austin Harshbarger (126), Jacob Conley (138), Gage Smith (144) and Johnny Bailey (190) advance.

Wellsville’s Ryley Barney (157), Leeland Monte (190) and Xavier Pullie (285) are into the next round.

Action on eight mats resumes at noon today. The second round championship along with first and second round consolations will be contested in the first session.

In the evening session slated to begin at 6 p.m., quarterfinal along with third and fourth round consolation matches will be decided.

New Columbiana County additions to the OVAC, Lisbon, Columbiana, United, Leetonia, Lisbon and East Palestine did not send anyone to the meet.

Coon-hunters canceled

EAST LIVERPOOL — Saturday’s turkey shoot at the Tri-State Coon Hunters Club has been canceled due to the weather forecast. The next shoot will be at 10 a.m. on Feb. 1, weather permitting. For more information, call or text 330-386-8832.

USA track event set

GENEVA, Ohio — The USA Track and Field Lake Erie Association Indoor Championships will be held Feb. 9 at the SPIRE Institute. There are no qualifying standards for the meet, but those wanting to compete need to be a member of USATF. See the organization’s site for details.
