IRISH BEAT DUQUESNE

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — John Mooney had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Prentiss Hubb added a career-high 14 points and Notre Dame beat Duquesne 67-56 on Tuesday night to improve to 4-1.

The Irish, who blew a 12-point first-half lead, trailed 52-51 with 7:09 remaining before going on a 13-0 run for a 64-52 advantage with 1:19 remaining. Mooney contributed five points and Rex Plueger four during the stretch. T.J. Gibbs scored seven of his 11 points in the second half for Notre Dame.

Duquesne was bidding for its first 4-0 start in nine seasons, dropped to 3-1. Tavian Dunn-Martin led the Dukes with 14 points. Michael Hughes added 10.

Eric Williams Jr. and Sincere Carry, who went into the game averaging a combined 30.3 points, were held to five, all by Williams, and shot a combined 1 of 16 from the field.

BIG PICTURE

Notre Dame: Earlier in the day, Notre Dame announced that junior tri-captain Elijah Burns would be granted an in-season transfer request. Scheduled to graduate in December, Burns could be eligible by another school in January. On a roster clogged by an array of players who have been earning regular action — 10 players averaging 11 or more minutes each — the subtraction of Burns at least gives the Irish fewer combinations to consider, and it is getting more pivotal to establish consistent top options as the schedule toughens.

The Irish’s next five opponents: DePaul (3-0), Illinois (1-3), Oklahoma (3-0), No. 17 UCLA (4-0) and No. 24 Purdue (4-1), own a combined 15-4 mark, and the last three are all on the road.

Duquesne: The Dukes lost the first of just three chances they’ll get this season against Power Five programs. The others come in the next month against Pittsburgh and Penn State.

UP NEXT

Notre Dame: The Irish put on a wrap their seven straight home games to open the season by hosting DePaul on Saturday.

Duquesne: The Dukes begin a staggering streak of nine straight games within the city of Pittsburgh when they host UMass Lowell on Sunday.
