Golden Bears shoot for ninth state title
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s volleyball team has the inside track to West Virginia Class AA state championship.
Now the Golden Bears, who have eight state championships in school history, have to pull it all together.
The top seed in the tournament, Oak Glen (25-10-3) will open play at 10 a.m. today with a match against No. 8 seed Independence (14-21-7) at the Charleston Coliseum and Civic Center.
The Golden Bears are loaded in the attack with seniors Averi Martin (347 kills), Brooklyn Six (307 kills) and Brayley Lash (237 kills) able to take control at any moment. Six (69 aces), Martin (40 aces) and Mikalyn Balch (38 aces) are the Bear service leaders, while Lash (61 blocks) and Martin (53 blocks) are strong at the net. Keira Vick is the top defender with 278 digs on the season.
If the Golden Bears win the opening match they will play, the winner of No. 4 seed James Monroe (35-10-3) and No. 5 Poca (35-5-5) at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the state semifinal.
The Class AA state championship match is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed and defending state champ Philip Barbour (42-11-2) will play No. 7 South Harrison (26-9) at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while No. 3 seed Charleston Catholic (35-9-1) will meet No. 6 seed Wheeling Central (17-10) at 3 p.m.
The winners of that match will play at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the state semifinal.
Oak Glen has beaten Philip Barbour, Charleston Catholic and Wheeling Central in the regular sesaon.
The Bears and Colts have split the last two state titles.
