NEW MIDDLETOWN — Area athletes did their best to compete with Mother Nature on Wednesday at the Div. III district track and field meet at Springfield Local High School.

In the end it was dead heat as about three quarters of the meet was completed before evening storms postponed the rest of the meet until Friday.

In the girls finals, Columbiana senior Kelsey Cameron captured the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 1 inch.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the North Royalton regional next week.

Southern’s Maddy Jones punched her ticket to regionals in the shot put by placing second (38-7).

Columbiana’s 3200-meter girls relay team also advanced by taking fourth in 10:47.

The boys were able to complete two finals with three area athletes taking the top three positions in the long jump.

Columbiana’s Aidan Radcliff won the event with a leap of 21-3 1/2 inches, while Wellsville’s Clayten Kersey was second (20-11 1/2) and Wellsville’s Jeren Jackson was third (19-9 3/4) to advance to the regional.

The boys discus was the lone final that did not get completed on Wednesday.

The girls still had prelims in the 300 hurdles, 800 run, 200 dash and 1600 relay to run before it was called.

The postponed boys prelims included the 400 dash, 300 hurdles, 800 run, 200 dash and 1600 relay.

The district meet is set to conclude Friday but a schedule was not set yet as of Wednesday evening.
