Bears close in on state
ST. MARYS, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s softball team is one win from the Class AA state tournament after a 1-0 win over St. Marys on Monday in the opening game of the Region 1 tournament.
Macy Hartung’s RBI triple scored Kayla Wright with two outs in the fifth inning for the deciding run. Wright’s single earlier in the inning was the only other Bear hit against St. Mary’s Cali Masters who struck out 16. Of Masters’ 105 pitches, 71 were strikes.
Mattie Carney, who is 11-5 on the season with a 2.75 ERA, was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts and a walk in a complete game effort. Carney was efficient as she threw 70 strikes on 93 pitches.
Oak Glen (26-10) will host St. Marys (26-6) at 5:30 p.m. in the second game of the best of three series. If the Bears win, they’ll qualify for the state tournament. If St. Marys wins, it will force a Game 3 on Wednesday back at St. Marys.
Oak Glen is ranked 13th overall and second in Class AA in the state of West Virginia by MaxPreps. St. Marys is third in Class AA.
