County salutes newest HOF class

LISBON — The third class of the Columbiana County Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame features four former standouts.

Richard Berryman (Columbiana Class of 1947); Jill Vincent Machovec (United, 1983); Valerie Scott Stambersky (Salem, 1994); and Dan Swoger (East Liverpool, 1999) will be recognized at approximately 7:15 p.m. Sunday during the 38th Columbiana County Classic at Lisbon High School.

Berryman was the team captain of the Columbiana boys basketball team that captured the 1947 Ohio Class B state championship, the only Columbiana County basketball team to win an OHSAA state title. Berryman was one of four Clippers named to the all-tournament team.

Vincent still holds school record for points in a game (47) along with most career points (1,244) and rebounds (927).

Scott led the Quakers to the 1994 Division II state semifinals and is still their all-time leading scorer with 1,707 career points.

Swoger was the point guard on the Potters’ team that reached the 1999 Division I state semifinals. He averaged 9.6 points and 9.3 assists a game as a senior.

Maysville closes in on state

ATHENS — The Zanesville Maysville boys basketball team is closing in on another shot at a state title.

Maysville opened up a 13-point lead in the first quarter and rolled over New Lexington, 74-44, in a Division IV regional semifinal Thursday night at the Ohio University Convocation Center.

Maysville, a state runner-up last year, led only 12-8 early before pulling away to a 40-17 halftime lead.

Maysville has won 14 of its last 15 games to improve to 24-3, including a 73-57 win over East Liverpool on Feb. 25.

The regional final between Maysville and Caledonia River Valley (24-2) will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. The winner advances to the state semifinals.

River Valley won Friday’s opener against Chillicothe Unioto, 66-65, in overtime for its 17th straight victory. The Vikings are coming off their first district title since 2007.

Dailey named honorable mention

BETHANY, W.Va. — For the second consecutive season, Bethany College men’s basketball player Cole Dailey earned a postseason honor from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Dailey was named honorable mention All-PAC in a vote of the conference coaches. He second team All-PAC last season.

The 6-foot-6 junior forward from East Liverpool finished ninth in the conference in scoring (15.6) and fourth in rebounds (7.8). Dailey also was second in blocked shots (2.0), fifth in assists (3.3) and fourth in field goal percentage (52.3%).

The program’s all-time block leader, Dailey also joined the 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs this season.

Dailey has started in 74 of his 76 collegiate games, scoring 1,224 career points for Bethany.

The Bison finished the season at 7-18 overall and 2-18 in the PAC.

YSU wins Horizon opener

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Nico Galette had 22 points in Youngstown State’s 72-67 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday in the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals. Galette also contributed 10 rebounds for the Penguins (20-12). Ty Harper scored 20 points, going 7 of 13 from the floor, including 3 for 7 from 3-point range, and 3 for 4 from the line. Cris Carroll shot 2 of 8 from the field, including 0 for 3 from 3-point range, and went 7 for 9 from the line to finish with 11 points, while adding 12 rebounds.

Quinton Morton-Robertson led the way for the Mastodons (19-13) with 21 points and three steals. Purdue Fort Wayne also got 19 points and 11 rebounds from Jalen Jackson.

Galette put up nine points in the first half for Youngstown State, which went into the break tied 26-26. Harper’s 16-point second half helped Youngstown State close out the five-point victory.
