McCord declares for draft
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord announced Friday on social media that he is declaring for the NFL draft after one season with the Orange.
McCord leads the nation with 4,779 yards passing this season, a total that broke Deshaun Watson’s Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record. He made the AP’s all-bowl team after passing for 453 yards and five touchdowns in a victory over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl.
Before that, McCord threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns as the Orange beat then-No. 6 Miami 42-38 in the regular-season finale and knocked the Hurricanes out of the ACC title game.
McCord ranks fourth nationally with 34 touchdown passes, production that helped the Orange finish with a 10-3 record.
“I want to be the one who brought (Syracuse football) back to what it once was,” McCord said after the win over Miami. “That’s a testament to this team. This win shows that Syracuse is for real and being part of that team that turned things around, that’s going to last forever.”
McCord thanked Syracuse coach Fran Brown for his part in what he called “an incredible journey to this point.”
“I will be forever grateful for your constant belief and trust in me during my time at Syracuse,” McCord said of his coach in a statement.
McCord started his career at Ohio State. He passed for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Buckeyes as the starting quarterback last season.
Fans banned from all stadiums
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has banned two fans who interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts during a World Series game at Yankee Stadium from attending any games at big league ballparks.
MLB sent a letter to Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen this week informing them of the decision.
“On Oct. 29, 2024, during Game 4 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium, you interfered with play by intentionally and forcefully grabbing a player. Your conduct posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player and went far over the line of acceptable fan behavior,” said the letter, the contents of which were first reported by the New York Post and later obtained by The Associated Press.
“Based on your conduct, Major League Baseball is banning you indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and other facilities,” the letter said. “You are also hereby banned indefinitely from attending any events sponsored by or associated with MLB. Please be advised that if you are discovered at any MLB property or event, you will be removed from the premises and subject to arrest for trespass.”
The fans were ejected from the game on Oct. 29 and banned from Game 5 the following night.
Betts leaped at the retaining wall in foul territory and caught Gleyber Torres’ pop fly in the first inning, but a fan in the first row with a gray Yankees road jersey grabbed Betts’ glove with both hands and pulled the ball out. Another fan grabbed Betts’ bare hand.
The Yankees called the behavior “egregious and unacceptable.” The team said Friday the two fans MLB banned were not season ticket holders.
Ex-LSU WR in trouble
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former LSU receiver Kyren Lacy is under investigation by Louisiana State Police in connection with a vehicle accident in December that killed a 78-year-old man in Lafourche Parish.
Lacy, who graduated from LSU in December and has declared for the NFL draft, allegedly was driving recklessly — speeding and passing in a no-passing zone — when a motorist who was swerving to avoid Lacy’s Dodge Charger crashed head-on into another vehicle.
Authorities with State Police Troop C in Gray, Louisiana, say the 24-year-old Lacy fled the scene of the accident without his involvement or calling for aid. State Police have obtained an arrest warrant for the former Tigers star for negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run and reckless operation of a vehicle.
Herman Hall of Thibodaux, Louisiana, who was involved in the head-on crash with another vehicle, died after being transported to a hospital, the state police report said.
State police say they are speaking with Lacy’s legal representation regarding when Lacy might turn himself in. The name of Lacy’s attorney was not provided.
Lacy, a Thibodaux native, was second for LSU in catches with 58 and yards receiving with 866 during the 2024 season and led the team in touchdowns receiving with nine in 12 games.
Lacy declared for the NFL Draft just days after the accident and did not play in LSU’s victory over Baylor in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 31.
LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette said the university has “no comment at this time out of respect for the legal process.”
