EAST LIVERPOOL — An early 12-0 run powered Steubenville past East Liverpool, 58-31, in girls basketball action Saturday.

The Potters scored the first basket of the game, but Big Red bounced back to take leads of 12-2 and 18-4. Big Red took a 23-8 lead through one quarter and went up 40-13 late in the second quarter.

Steubenville improved to 1-0, while East Liverpool dropped to 0-2.

Steubenville also won the junior varsity game, 21-10.

The Potters will play at Cambridge on Tuesday.

Sandy Valley 51, Southern 33

MAGNOLIA — The Southern girls basketball team is going to have to learn to win without Ashley Shroades, who graduated as Columbiana County’s all-time leading scorer.

The Indians dropped Saturday’s season opener with a 51-33 loss to Sandy Valley.

Sandy Valley scored a combined 37 points in the second and third quarters to pull away.

Teresa Petro had a game-high 13 points and Peyton Nicholson added nine points for the Cardinals (1-1).

Ashley Shroades led the Indians to 18-7 record last season and a share of the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference title for their first league title since 1990. It will take several players to make up for her 25 points a game.

Raelea Carosiello topped the Indians with 10 points and five rebounds. Allyssa Shroades had eight points, three rebounds and five steals, Addy Martin six points and Haylee Kellogg five points and three rebounds. Makenna Jones grabbed six rebounds.

There was no junior varsity game.

Southern will play at Heartland Christian at 6 p.m. today.
