COLUMBUS — Beaver Local advanced two wrestlers to the Div. II state semifinals on Saturday and seemed poised for a big Sunday at the 85th annual state wrestling tournament at the Schottenstein Center.

The two turned in high podium finishes for the Beavers but not as high as they wanted.

Decorated senior Logan Ours, a University of Wyoming recruit, came into the tournament ranked as the No. 1 grappler at 157 pounds by Boro Fan Almanac and InterMat Ohio.

He was in position to become the first Beaver Local and Columbiana County wrestler to win an individual title since Adam Hoppel did it in 2002.

London senior Antwan Burns, who was second in the very tough Wilmington district, turned in perhaps the biggest upset of the day on Saturday as he defeated Ours 10-6 in the semifinal.

Burns took control with two takedowns in the first period to lead 4-2. He added three more takedowns the rest of the way to secure the win.

Ours bounced back on Sunday with a 7-1 win over Ashland’s Jon Metzger and a 4:23 pin of Marengo Highland’s Cody Matthews in the third-place final. It was Ours’ second win over Matthews in the tournament.

“I’m not super dissatisfied but I really think I put in more work than anyone and deserved that spot,” Ours said of his top ranking. “I was confident coming in, I just didn’t show up.”

Ours finished his final Beaver Local campaign at 35-3. Burns carried his semifinal-win momentum to an 8-4 state championship win over St. Paris Graham Local’s Gunner Cramblett.

Beaver Local senior Jaymin Salsberry was sent to the 132-pound consolation bracket after an 11-4 loss to Columbus DeSales’ David McClelland on Saturday.

Salsberry returned on Sunday to down Copley’s Zane Van Voorhis 11-6 in the consolation semifinals. Salsberry had started the tournament with a 5-4 win over Van Voorhis on Friday. In the third-place final Salsberry was beaten 12-0 by Perry’s Brock Christian.

McClelland went on to win the state championship with an 8-3 win over Louisville’s Pablo Castro.

Beaver Local head coach Johnny McComas was pleased with both the efforts of Ours and Salsberry.

“Logan was a great guy to have in our program. He lifted up his teammates and us as coaches both on and off the mat,” McComas said. “Third place is not what he wanted, but I am proud of him for battling through adversity and injury.”

“Jaymin had a great weekend,” McComas continued. “He was super fun to watch and kept us on the edge of our chairs for four years. I love him like a little brother.”

Salsberry finished his senior season at 33-6.

West Branch senior Steven Marra capped his career by placing eighth at 215.

Mansfield Senior’s Mekhi Bradley scored a 3-0 decision over Marra on Sunday in the seventh-place match.

Marra is West Branch’s 37th state-placer in school history and second eighth-place finisher.

Marra went 44-4 this season with all four losses coming in the last two weeks of competition.

Beaver Local senior Mark Emmerling Jr. was eliminated on Saturday with two consecutive losses at 138 pounds after winning the opener on Friday.
