Southern moves on
COLUMBIANA — Columbiana’s volleyball team didn’t have to take the court in a series of Div. IV sectional openers it hosted on Wednesday.
Due to a COVID issue, Lordstown did not face the Clippers in the opening match of the night.
Columbiana, the fifth seed, was given a pass into the next round and will host ninth-seeded Jackson-Milton on Saturday.
In the second match of the night, 11th-seeded Badger defeated Leetonia 25-12, 25-10, 25-18. Leetonia falls to 1-16. Badger is 17-6 and will play sixth-seeded Southern at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Columbiana High School.
Southern defeated Springfield 25-15, 25-10, 25-11 in the final match of the evening.
Rylee Mellott totaled 16 points, 18 assists and five kills for the sixth-seeded Indians. Ashley Shroades collected 12 points and six kills, Adriana Gilliam nine points and nine kills, Ronni Mayfield 14 assists, Elizabeth Mostella two kills and one block and Aleah Bach five kills.
Cross country at GlenOak
CANTON — Nine Columbiana County schools will be running in the district cross country meet at Canton GlenOak High School on Saturday.
Salem and West Branch will compete in Division II with Columbiana, Crestview, East Palestine, Heartland Christian, Leetonia, Lisbon, Sebring, South Range, Southern Local, United and Western Reserve in Division III.
Saturday’s schedule is Division III girls at 9:30 a.m., Division III boys at 10:15 p.m., Division II girls at 11:30 a.m., Division II boys at 12:15 p.m., Division I girls at 1:30 p.m. and Division I boys at 2:15 p.m.
Advancing to the Boardman regional will be the top four teams and top 16 individuals in Division III girls, top five teams and top 20 individuals in Division III boys, top six team and top 24 individuals in Division II boys and top seven teams and top 28 individuals in Division II girls.
