Potters’ Wright leaps to high state finish
HILLIARD — A pair of Columbiana County champions also made their way to the podium at the fourth Ohio High School Athletic Association 7th and 8th Grade State Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
East Liverpool eighth-grader Gavin Wright tied for fourth in the boys high jump, while Salem eighth-grader Maggie Hall placed in two girls distance races at Hilliard Darby High School.
Wright cleared 5-foot-8, an inch off the winning jump by Loveland’s Tyler Schwinn.
Hall was seventh in the 1600 run (5:17.50) and eighth in the 800 run (2:24.8). She also was 17th in the 400 dash (63.01 seconds).
Maggie Hopple, another Salem eighth-grader, was 10th in the 800 run (2:25.11) and 13th in the 1600 run (5:23.91).
Salem’s Maddy Andres was 13th in the girls shot put (35-feet-3).
Minerva had a pair of 21st-place finishes — Hannah Ison in the 1600 run (5:30.37) and Brooklyn Malone in the 800 run (2:28.08).
In the boys meet, Minerva’s Rowen Hoffee was 11th in the 800 run (2:10.74) and Springfield Local ‘s Dante Gentile tied for 12th in the high jump (5-5). Springfield’s Kaesen Kosek also competed in the high jump.
Massillon won the boys team title with 27 points, while Huber Heights Weisenborn took the girls team title with 50 points.
