Martins Ferry drops Beavers

CALCUTTA –The Beaver Local girls basketball team dropped to 1-13 on the season after falling to Martins Ferry 78-44 on Monday.

Martins Ferry led 45-23 at the half. The Martins Ferry lead got as high as 70-34.

For the Beavers, Chansyn Hoppel had 19 points and seven assists. Peyton Roberts added 13 points.

For Martins Ferry, Maria Clark had 21 points and Allarah Jones had 19 points.

Beaver Local will head to East Liverpool on Thursday.

In jayvee action, the Beavers won 30-20. For Beaver Local, Taylor Fitzsimmons had nine points and for Martin’s Ferry, Avery Marshank had seven points.

Columbiana 72, Lisbon 34

LISBON–The Columbiana girls basketball team used a 41-point second half to roll past Lisbon 72-34 on Monday. Columbiana led 31-23 at the half and then outscored the Blue Devils 41-11 in the second half to run away with this contest. Lisbon falls to 3-8 on the season and 1-5 in league.

For Columbiana, Grace Witmer recorded 17 points and Tori Long added 16 points. Ryleigh Zohnd had 11 points.

For Lisbon, Madison Haifley had 12 points and knocked down four three-pointers.

Lisbon will host Wellsville on Thursday.

In jayvee action, Lisbon won 33-28. For Lisbon, Cami Freeland had 14 points and for Columbiana, Isabella Parish had 12 points.

Valley 36, United 25

YOUNGSTOWN — Valley Christian wrestled the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference lead from United with a 36-25 win Monday.

Kristen Gill led Valley with a game-high 22 points. She scored 16 points in the second and third quarters when Valley pulled away with a 21-6 run.

United, which had its nine-game winning streak snapped, drops to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in league play. Valley improves to 4-1 in the league. Both teams have dropped a game to Columbiana.

United led 10-5 in the first quarter, but was held to 15 points the rest of the game.

Taylor Cope paced United with 11 points, nine in the first half.

United won the two-quarter junior varsity game, 19-9, as Grayson Kidder scored seven points.

Valley hosts Southern on Thursday.
