Dawson qualified for state twice

The East Liverpool junior doubles team of Gianna Davie and Sydney Cooper are the first Columbiana County girls tennis players to qualify for the state tennis tournament since Beaver Local’s Emily Dawson did it in Div. II singles in 2008 and 2009. Dawson, who went on to play at West Liberty University, qualified for state as a freshman and sophomore.

Davie and Cooper qualified for the state tournament on Wednesday after winning the Portsmouth Div. II district doubles championship. They will play in the state tennis tournament starting Oct. 23 at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Playoff COVID cancellations

As of Thursday afternoon, there were seven second round Ohio high school football playoff games canceled due to COVID-19 infection or exposure. Indian Creek had to shut down its football program due to positive cases within the team earlier this week. Its playoff opponent last Saturday was Indian Valley and one Creek player who tested positive was in contact with reportedly 70 percent of Indian Valley players during the game, so the Indian Valley program decided to not play its scheduled Div. IV second round game with Bloom Carroll on Saturday. Bloom-Carroll will advance to the third round to play the winner of Carrollton or Marion-Franklin next Saturday.
