Beavers, Indians bow out
EUCLID — Beaver Local’s run of good results on the football field came to a grinding halt on Saturday as East Cleveland Shaw eliminated the Beavers from the Div. IV, Region 13 playoffs with a 35-0 win at Euclid High School.
Beaver Local saw its six-game winning streak snapped. The Beavers were averaging 48.5 points during that run.
Shaw, the eighth seed, advances to meet top-seed Canal Fulton Northwest at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Cardinals are 5-2 and this was their largest margin of victory this season.
The first quarter ended with the Cardinals up 7-0. A 68-yard Shaw touchdown run with eight minutes to go in the second quarter made it 14-0.
Martin Romero’s 35-yard field goal right before the half extended Shaw’s lead to 17-0.
The Beavers were able to hold the Cardinals scoreless in the third quarter but could not generate anything of their own.
Kobe Kyle’s 1-yard touchdown with eight minutes to go in the game made it 23-0. Kishon Piece extended the lead with a 40-yard interception return. The Beavers also saw a fumble returned for a touchdown with less than a minute left.
Beaver Local (6-2) will look to resume regular season play next week. It tenatively has a scheduled game at Martins Ferry on Friday.
NORWALK — Southern Local’s draw in the Div. VII, Region 25 playoffs was a tough one and the Indians are still looking for their first playoff win in school history.
The ninth-seeded Indians couldn’t gain any traction on small-school power Norwalk St. Paul, the eighth seed, in a 48-14 loss on Saturday in a second round game.
St. Paul, 6-1, advances to meet top-seed Warren JFK on Friday at a site to be determined.
Southern Local, 5-2, had won five straight after its opening loss to Leetonia.
The big swing in the game came with the score 27-8 and Southern facing a 4th and 7 from its own 44 with 1:01 left in the half. The Indians tried to gain a first down with a pass but it was incomplete.
St. Paul scored on a 44-yard touchdown pass on the next play to make it 34-8 at the half.
Brad Sloan carried the load for the Indians with 76 yards rushing on 10 carries. He added two touchdowns and also had four catches for 44 yards.
Josh Pratt was 8 of 16 for 107 yards and three interceptions for the Indians. Timmy West hauled in three catches for 48 yards.
Southern did not have any regular season opponents lined up for the rest of the season coming into Saturday.
