WV Derby with no fans

CHESTER, W.Va. — The 51st running of the West Virginia Derby will go ahead this year, but without a crowd to watch.

Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort announced on its social media accounts Wednesday afternoon this year’s derby will be held Aug. 1, with a post time of 2 p.m.

As part of continuing precautions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, spectators will not be allowed during the race.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, and while keeping the health and safety of our guests and team members top of mind, we are disheartened to announce the West Virginia Derby will be held this year without spectators in attendance,” the announcement said. “Although this day is closed to the public, you can still get in on the all exciting action through our livestreaming partner, TVG. Wagering information will be announced shortly through our social media and website.”

Spectators will continue to be permitted during regular race cards held at Mountaineer Sunday through Wednesday.
