Case Western, Oberlin cancel fall sports

Two NCAA Division III programs in Northeast Ohio, Case Western Reserve University and Oberlin College, announced Wednesday they will not participate in the fall sports season.

“We do not believe that we can create a safe framework to conduct fall sports because of the high contact required in almost all of the sports,” Oberlin president Carmen Twillie Ambar wrote. “We found the risk that this would place on our student-athletes to be unacceptable.”

“Intercollegiate competition is an essential part of your undergraduate experience at CWRU and we have worked for months exploring ways to do this with the health and safety of our student athletes, coaches, and support staff as the top priority,” Case Western Reserve director of athletics Amy Backus wrote to students. “Regrettably, this very difficult decision was made bearing those factors in mind.”

Case Western Reserve competes in the University Athletic Association, except for football which participates in Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Oberlin is in the North Coast Athletic Conference

The move impacts football, volleyball, cross country and soccer at both schools; tennis at Case Western Reserve and field hockey at Oberlin.
