Clipper series opens

COLUMBIANA — The 22nd annual Clipper Cross Country Series got started in waves Wednesday.

Runners were separated in four races, each 30 minutes, to ensure social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Girard junior Ricky Marsico won the men’s race in 9 minutes, 52.7 seconds on the 1.85-mile course at the Ward Athletic Complex behind Columbiana High School. Recent East Liverpool graduate Izaiha Browning was second, less than a second behind.

Former series champion Alexis Cunningham of East Palestine won the women’s race in 11:10.1. Her sister, Hannah, placed second.

There were more than 140 runners registered and 122 finishers.

The second of four races will be held next Wednesday on the same course. Cost is $6 per runner per night. Register online at secondsoleracing.com or email crystal.boggs@columbianaschools.org.
