State track meets split up

COLUMBUS — If the high school spring sports season gets under way in May, the state track meet will be held at three different high schools in suburban Columbus.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association said since Ohio State University is not available, the state track meet is scheduled for June 26-27 with Division I at Hilliard Darby, Division II at Pickerington North and Division III at Westerville North.

Everything is contingent on if the governor lifts the stay-at-home order due to the coronavirus pandemic and reopens schools on May 4.

The baseball state tournament is scheduled for June 19-21 at Canal Park in Akron.; the state softball tournament June 25-27 at Firestone Stadium in Akron; and the boys tennis state tournament June 18-20 at Hilliard Davidson High School.

Mount Union classics set

ALLIANCE — Two more classic Mount Union football games are on tap to be broadcast by WIVM-TV in Canton and online Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets rallied from a 19-0 deficit to take a 20-19 lead with 5:53 remaining. On a fourth-and-11 play, Mount Union’s Chris Denton made a leaping 29-yard touchdown catch with 2:14 to play to give the Purple Raiders a 25-20 win and their 20th straight OAC title.

At 8 p.m., the 2008 NCAA Division III semifinal matchup with Mount Union hosting Wheaton (Ill.) will be broadcast. Mount Union senior running back Nate Kmic became the NCAA career rushing leader as he ran for 310 yards, pushing his career total to 7,986 yards, in the Purple Raiders’ 45-24 win.

Kentucky Derby spring sale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Derby Museum is looking to unload all merchandise for the 146th Derby dated May 2.

The race has been postponed from that date to Sept. 5 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

As a result, over 300 Derby 146 items with the old date will be available for online sale from April 15 to May 3. The museum will donate 20% of sales proceeds to two funds that help those affected by COVID-19.

The merchandise includes Derby glasses, T-shirts, bags, socks, posters and magnets. It also includes items associated with the Kentucky Oaks, the race for fillies held on Derby eve.

Derby glasses have long been popular with collectors and limited production runs or mistakes can make them highly sought after.
