Hall, Beaver pair wear crowns
WHEELING, W.Va. — The OVAC saved the best for last.
In a match featuring two top-10 All-Americans and previous West Virginia state champions, Oak Glen’s Peyton Hall and Parkersburg South’s Brayden Roberts closed the show in the 152-pound final on Saturday at the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Championships at WesBanco Arena.
Hall, the top seed, captured his third career OVAC title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the second-seeded Roberts.
Hall, Oak Glen’s most decorated wrestler, improved to 30-2 on the season. Hall’s other OVAC championships came at 120 pounds as a freshman and 138 pounds last year. He was second at 132 as a sophomore.
It’s yet another feather in the cap of the West Virginia University recruit who is ranked fourth in the nation in his weight class by FloWrestling. Later on this season, Hall will attempt to become the first Oak Glen wrestler in school history to win a state championship all four years.
The two wrestlers met earlier this season with Hall defeating Roberts 7-4 at the Super 32.
“This tournament has been great to me,” Hall said. “This title means a little more than the other two because it allows me to end my OVAC career on top, especially against a world-ranked wrestler like Brayden.”
Roberts will also be a part of the WVU wrestling team and the pair will room together.
“We talked before the match and decided that whoever won would get first choice on beds,” Hall said with a slight smile.
Mark Emmerling Jr. gave Beaver Local its first championship of the tournament by pinning top-seed Nate Shelek of Wheeling Park in 2:55 in the 120-pound final. Shelek came in as the top seed. Emmerling (20-7) arrived in the final after a 10-3 win over John Marshall’s Ethan Gray in the semifinal.
Emmerling finished fifth at 113 pounds last season and is the son of former four-time OVAC champion Mark Emmerling. As a team, Beaver Local scored 209 points to win the Class 4A title.
At 132, Beaver Local sophomore Logan Ours earned his second OVAC title by downing East Liverpool standout junior Howard Williams in a 2-0 sudden victory. Williams, the second seed, was last year’s 113-pound champ. Ours was the 2019 120-pound champion.
Ours (17-4) beat Weir’s Wyatt Conley in the semifinal by a 6-5 decision. Williams (17-2) topped Parkersburg South’s Brayden Johnson by a 5-0 count in the other semifinal.
Beaver Local head coach Jonny McComas said he was pleased with his team’s effort despite not being able to defend its overall title.
“This sport is all about adversity and ups-and-downs. For the most part, this tournament didn’t go the way we thought it would, but we are stepping out of here with some champions, some good wins and some things we can improve upon,” he said.
“We’re excited for Logan. He had to take a little time off to come back and win this tournament,” the Beaver coach said. “That’s big for him mentally in moving forward to compete for a state title down the road.”
At 160, Beaver Local senior Skyler Lasure was denied an OVAC championship to open the final round as Steubenville junior Ethan Pappas scored a pin in 4:33 to win the weight class crown. Lasure (18-5) beat Wheeling Park’s Canon Welker by a 15-0 technical fall to reach the final. The OVAC championship was Pappas’ first, having finished second at 160 last year.
In the 170-pound final Beaver Local junior Logan Krulik also came up short of his first OVAC title, losing a 5-2 decision to Cameron’s Ian Bush in the final. Krulik, the top seed, arrived in the final by pinning Indian Creek’s Austin Starr in 56 seconds. Krulik (20-6) was a 152-pound runner-up as a junior.
Southern Local junior Hunter Morris came up just short of becoming the Indians’ first OVAC tournament champion as he fell 4-2 to Steubenville’s David Tuttle in the 182-pound final. Morris (20-3) is a two-time AAU All-American and arrived in the finals by way of a 6-5 win over Wheeling Park’s Erick Brothers Jr. in the semifinal.
¯ One of the best wrestlers in the country impressed in his run to the 220-pound championship. Parkersburg South senior Braxton Amos, a University of Wisconsin recruit, pinned all five of his opponents in a total of 4:31 to claim his third OVAC title. He also was named the tournament’s Hercules Award and Bierkortte (MVP) Award winners. Over his three-year high school career (his freshman year was eliminated due to injury) he’s 126-0. Amos is ranked as the nation’s top 220-pound wrestler and many publications consider him to be the country’s best pound-for-pound wrestler.
¯ Beaver Local senior Daniel Wirth was the top seed at 285 but was upset in the in the semifinal by Linsly’s Chance Knight. Wirth followed that up with two more losses to take sixth. He was second at 285 last year.
¯ Beaver Local senior Cole McComas didn’t have a shot at gaining his third OVAC title of his career as he was upset with a 7-5 sudden victory in the 138-pound semifinals by Wheeling Park’s Andrew Shelek. McComas did rebound to take third as he closes out his OVAC tournament career with championships at 106 as a freshman and 113 as a sophomore followed by a runner-up finish at 126 as a junior.
¯ Beaver Local’s other placers included Devon Salsberry (fourth at 145), John Woodburn (seventh at 126) and Jonathan Potts (seventh at 152).
¯ East Liverpool’s other placers included Eric Williams (sixth at 138) and Skylor Wooley (fifth at 220).
¯ Jason Tice led Wellsville with an impressive third place showing at 126. Justin Sarge was fith at 152 and Caden Weekley was sixth at 220.
¯ Southern Local’s other placers were Dylan Milhoan (fifth at 145) and Sam Lowe (sixth at 195).
¯ Other Oak Glen placers were Dylan Heinrich ( sixth at 170), Caiden Adams (eighth at 195), Camden Barr (seventh at 106), Braxton Dlugopolski (eighth at 113), Clayton Lamb (fifth at 120), Kaden Lundy (sixth at 126) and Jonathan Creese (eighth at 138).
¯ Parkersburg South won the Class 5A title with 251 total points. Class 3A went to Barnesville (98 points) and Class 2A/1A went to Shenandoah (103.5).
