Blue Devils fight more than Clippers

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana senior Grace Hammond is having a big impact for the Clipper girls basketball team.

On Tuesday, Hammond scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in Columbiana’s key 47-42 win over Lisbon.

Columbiana moves to 9-3 and 7-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference, while Lisbon falls to 7-7 and 4-3. The Clippers have a three-game lead over the Devils with five league games to play.

Tuesday’s game marked the return of senior Kayla Muslovski to the Clipper lineup. She had missed the last four games for undisclosed reasons and had 13 points and four steals in her return.

Columbiana led 17-12 after the first quarter, but a quick four-point spurt by Lisbon’s Maddie Liberati cut the lead to 17-16 with 4:36 left in the first half.

Liberati played physical in the post garnering 18 points. and 10 rebounds.

The Devils were down 21-18 at the half and were within striking distance with a four-point deficit at the end of the third quarter.

Lisbon, however, did not manage a fourth quarter push to complete the upset bid.

Standout Lisbon senior Izzy Perez added 17 points. and seven steals.

Karissa Tringhese played a signficant role for the Clippers on the boards with eight rebounds.

The Clippers struggled from beyond the arc, making just 4 of 25 three-point attempts.

The game featured the two teams in alternate colored uniforms as part of a “We Fight” cancer awareness contest. The boys varsity game followed the girls contest.

Columbiana will be at Wellsville on Thursday, while Lisbon is at Valley Christian on Saturday.

BOYS GAME

Columbiana 60, Lisbon 48

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana’s boys basketball team made it a clean sweep with a 60-48 win over Lisbon on Tuesday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball play.

Sean Whitehead had 23 points and five steals to lead the Clippers (11-2, 6-0).

Quenton Cross had seven points and six rebounds.

Lisbon was led by Blayne Brownfield’s 19 points and seven rebounds. Lisbon is 5-8 and 4-3. Gaige Rohm added 18 points. Ryan McCullough had seven assists.

More than $2,000 was collected for cancer awareness by both schools. The money will be distributed to local families.

Columbiana is at Wellsville on Friday. Lisbon is at Western Reserve next Tuesday.

Southern 51, Wellsville 36

SALINEVILLE — Cam Grodhaus had 16 points and seven rebounds as Southern solved Wellsville 51-36 on Tuesday.

Brock Smalley added 14 points for the Indians, 10-1, 5-1.

Southern is at United on Friday.

Darien Suggs scored 15 for the Tigers.

Wellsville hosts Columbiana on Friday.

Southern won the two-quarter jayvee game, 33-17. James Burris had eight points for the Indians.
