Potters bow out

ATHENS — East Liverpool’s entries in the Division II district girls tennis tournament bowed out Wednesday.

Potters’ singles player McKenzie Harman won a singles match before being eliminated, while the Potters’ doubles team of Chloe Stewart and Gianna Davie dropped their opener at the Ohio University Tennis Center.

Eight singles players and eight doubles players competed for two state berths in each. The girls tennis state tournament will be held Oct. 18-19 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Harman opened with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Washington Court House’s Shawna Conger before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Adena’s Madylyn Shipley. Shipley then lost to Unioto’s Sylvia Gray, 6-1, 6-0, in the district final

Gray won her fourth straight district title in earning a fourth state berth.

Steart and Davie lost their match to Circleville’s Emma Shaw and Kara Hinton, 6-2, 6-1.

Shaw and Hinton lost to Wheelsburg’s Maddie Gill and Kaitlyn Sommer, 6-2, 6-1,

Gill and Sommer went on to capture the district title by downing Athens’ Ami Brannan and Anna Chen, 7-5, 6-4.
