Carter breaks records

RAYLAND– It was a record-setting kind of night at World War II Memorial Stadium Friday evening as the invading East Liverpool Potters took care of the homestanding Buckeye Local Panthers by a 49-8 count.

While the scoreboard may have had a wide margin showing, both teams had individuals etch their names into the histories of their respective schools.

Potters senior tailback Derek Carter had himself a night, scoring a school-record six times while netting 217 yards on 17 carries. His yardage total helped him eclipse the school’s career rushing record of 2,251 yards as well.

East Liverpool is 4-4 and 3-1 in the Buckeye 8 Athletic League.

Meanwhile, Buckeye Local saw senior quarterback Seth Richardson set the school record for completions in a career and move closer to the school record for career passing yards.

“We came into this game with Derek Carter 64 yards away from being our all-time rushing leader and he was able to accomplish that, and it couldn’t have happened to a better kid,” complimented Potters coach Josh Ludwig. “He also broke the single game touchdown record. We swarmed around, we played well, we blocked well. We played good, team offense. We didn’t come into this game thinking we were going to throw the ball a whole lot, we were going to try to run it, not only for Derek, but we thought we had an advantage being able to run it with our offensive line, so kudos to our offensive line and Derek Carter.”

Ludwig continued, “we knew we needed to have a positive week this week, we had a good week of practice and we got our record back to 4-4. Those losses are still haunting us. Each week we come back out and prepare the same way for each team. I really think Buckeye was much improved team and their coach does a great job. The kids played very hard, we were just able to execute our offense tonight.”

It’s back to the drawing board for the Panthers, who are now 1-7, 0-3, entering a game against winless Edison next Friday.

“A couple times we got the ball inside the five and inside the one, (but just couldn’t finish the drive). I’ll give hats off to Coach Ludwig and East Liverpool, they have got a real fine football team over there. Their record is not indicative of what they are, their four losses are all very good squads,” noted Panthers coach Roger Herbert. “I thought we played well in spurts and I’m proud of my kids again. We made some mistakes and had some interceptions early. I do want to congratulate Seth. He set a record career-wise for Buckeye, which is good for him. We don’t play for records, but it’s nice when you get acknowledged for those. I think we have just got to keep going forward, we have got a big game for us next week in Edison, kind of a rival of late, We’ve got to go up to their field and I just told our boys that we are going to get their absolute best game, there is no doubt in my mind, so we’ve got to come ready to play.”

The Potters wasted little time to open scoring. After picking off the Panthers’ first pass attempt, Carter took his first carry of what proved to be an eventful night 36 yards for a score. Austin Deering was true on his first PAT of the evening for a 7-0 Potters lead 51 seconds into the game.

The Panthers punted after a three-and-out and the visitors proceeded to march 45-yards on eight plays, capped by another Carter score, this one from five-yards out. The Potters then picked off Richardson on the next two drives, both of which culminated in Carter touchdown rushes of 36 and 18 yards, respectively, the first of which saw him eclipse the all-time East Liverpool rushing record. Deering’s kicks put the Potters up 28-0 after one.

The hosts cracked the scoreboard on the first play of the second quarter as Richardson connected with junior receiver Hayden Taylor on a beautiful 43-yard pass. The completion gave Richardson the Buckeye Local all-time completion record. Robert Smith bowled in for the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 28-8.

East Liverpool quickly took momentum back on its next drive, as Carter skirted the side for 51-yards down to Panthers four. He was rewarded on the next play with his fifth touchdown of the evening, followed by another Deering placement. The visitors netted one more score before the break, as quarterback Nick Woodyard took the ball 17-yards for six. Deering made it 42-8 at halftime.

The second half, which was played under a running clock, saw one more touchdown. Carter took the Potters’ first play from scrimmage in from 20-yards out for his sixth score of the night to break the Potters’ game record.

Carter’s 217 yards led EL’s rushing attack that collectively went for 290 yards with Devin Toothman, who added two interceptions on defense, grabbing 44 yards on the ground as well. The Panthers offense was held to 172 total yards, saw Richardson throw for 106 yards and a score on eight completions. Taylor led all Panthers receivers with three catches for 59 yards and the aforementioned score.

East Liverpool visits Weir next week, while Buckeye Local invades Jefferson County rival Edison.
