Malvern 6, Wellsville 0

WELLSVILLE — Wellsville’s explosive offense was grounded on Friday.

Malvern played stingy defense and handed the Tigers a 6-0 loss at Nicholson Stadium.

Both teams go to 2-1.

Penalties and other execution errors led to a stalemate in the first quarter. The Tigers did manage an impressive goalline stand as the Wellsville defense stopped the Hornets three times from the 1 and from the 3 on fourth down.

Justin Wright also had an interception in the first quarter for the Tigers.

Adam Moser’s 10-yard touchdown run with 6:46 left in the first half gave Malvern a 6-0 advantage.

Wellsville was plagued by two interceptions in the second quarter, but did get the ball back late in the frame off a Malvern fumble. The final drive of the half proved unfruitful for the home team, however.

Malvern outgained Wellsville 151-68 in the first half.

The defensive battle continued into the second half with Wellsville’s only scoring opportunity coming on a 27-yard missing field goal by Casey Lemasters.

Draven Crow came up with a big tackle on fourth and 1 from the Wellsville 41 with 2:56 to go to give the Tigers a chance at one final drive.

A Kenneth Martin interception sealed the deal for the Hornets with 1:08 left.

Wellsville opens league play at Leetonia next Friday.
