Marathon runner played at Walsh

CLEVELAND — A 22-year-old woman who had been a soccer standout at Walsh University died on Sunday during the running of the Cleveland Maraton.

University Hospitals spokesman George Stamatis says Taylor Ceepo collapsed at Sunday’s race and was dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday that the cause of the Medina woman’s death hadn’t been determined.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported Cristine Torek, a public relations specialist for the marathon, said Ceepo collapsed as she was nearly finished with the race. The estimated 15,000 runners had been told they could run or walk as temperatures reached the 80s.

A statement Monday from executive race director Jack Staph said marathon officials are “looking into the situation.”

Walsh University in North Canton said Ceepo graduated this spring. Ceepo was also a graduate of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
