Imagine Dragons to play Canton

CANTON (AP) — Imagine Dragons will perform at the Pro Football Hall of Fame to help kick off the NFL’s 100th season.

The Hall announced Tuesday that the alternative-rock band will headline the Concert for Legends on Aug. 4.

Previous featured acts for the concert include Aerosmith, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith and Maroon 5.

Imagine Dragons performed last month at the BCS national title game.

The August show at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium is part of a week of festivities that includes first preseason game of 2019 and the enshrinement of new Hall of Famers — Champ Bailey, Pat Bowlen, Gil Brandt, Tony Gonzalez, Ty Law, Kevin Mawae, Ed Reed and Johnny Robinson.

New league gets cash injection

Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon is investing $250 million in the Alliance of American Football.

Dundon also will serve as chairman of the fledgling eight-team league that began play on Feb. 9. His involvement came together in a matter of days last week, according to Dundon and Alliance co-founder Charlie Ebersol, though Dundon had been monitoring the AAF’s development and debut.

Ebersol said Tuesday that reports the Alliance was short on cash and needed a bailout from Dundon in order to make payroll were untrue. He said the league had a technical glitch in its payroll system that has been fixed.

“Tom’s funds were transferred to Alliance accounts last week, and players have never been in jeopardy of not receiving their earned paychecks,” Ebersol said. “It was a clerical error and has been resolved. The two are unrelated.”

Capers hooks up with Jags

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Former NFL head coach and Mount Union player Dom Capers has joined Jacksonville’s coaching staff as senior defensive assistant, returning to the Jaguars two decades after his first stint with the team.

The team says Capers will work closely with defensive coordinator Todd Wash and the other assistants on that side of the ball.

Capers served as Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator from 1999-2000 under current executive Tom Coughlin.

Capers was the head coach of two NFL expansion teams — the Carolina Panthers (1995-98) and the Houston Texans (2002-05). Most recently, he served as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator (2009-17). He was out of the league last season, but spent countless time at Jacksonville’s practice facility.

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone says Capers “has career experiences and accomplishments that will benefit our coaches and our players. He adds a unique perspective and veteran presence that will be valuable assets to immediately help us.”

The Jaguars also released place-kicker Kai Forbath on Tuesday. Forbath played the final three games of the regular season in place of injured starter Josh Lambo, who was set to hit free agency in March.

Lambo signed a four-year, $15.5 million contract extension last week, making Forbath expendable.

Site lists banned coaches

An advocacy group has published a first-of-its-kind comprehensive list of coaches banned from Olympic sports, creating a database of nearly 1,000 people no longer allowed to work in the U.S. Olympic system because of sex-abuse allegations, doping positives and other criminal activities involving minors.

The staff at greatcoach.com compiled the list using information from the U.S. Center for SafeSport, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and the more than 50 national governing bodies that oversee individual sports, most of which feed into the U.S. Olympic team.

The website, designed by former pro moguls skier Bill Kerig, was originally started to help families find certified coaches who are best qualified to work with their kids. — AP
