Golden Bears send six to state

FAIRMONT, W.Va — Oak Glen’s wrestling team qualified six team members for the state meet after Saturday’s action at the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Class AA, Region 1 wrestling tournament at Fairmont Senior Field House.

Oak Glen standouts Shawn Moore (113 pounds) and Peyton Hall (138) were champion of their respective weight classes.

Moore beat East Fairmont’s Blake Boyers 2-1 in the championship final, while Hall pinned Fairmont Senior’s Tavian Richardson in 1:45.

Kyler O’Connor (195) and Jonathan Creese (145) finished as runner-ups in their respective divisions for the Golden Bears. Madonna’s Alec Cook bested Creese by a 5-1 decision in the 145 final, while O’Connor lost a 3-1 decision to Petersburg’s Alec Burgess in the 195 final.

Camden Barr was third at 106 pounds after scoring a 10-0 major decision over North Marion’s Brody Hess in the consolation final.

Clayton Lamb also was third at 120 after he bested Fairmont Senior’s Marko Tarley 3-1 in that consolation final.

The top four finishers in each weight class earned a berth at the West Virginia state tournament set for Feb. 21-23 at the Huntington Civic Center.

Oak Glen finished second in the team standings with 175.5 points which was behind East Fairmont’s 196.5 points.

Buckeye Local Panther Classic

RAYLAND–The East Liverpool wrestling team finished 13th out of 25 teams at Saturday’s Buckeye Local Panther Classic.

Skylor Wooley captured the 220-pound championship for the Potters, who finished with 63 1/2 points. Barnsville won the team title with 127 1/2 points.

Also for the Potters, Justin Buchheit finished third in the 106-pound bracket, Logan Bennett (145 pounds) was seventh, Kaz Zubay took fifth in the heavyweight bracket.
