County sees 453 deer taken

COLUMBUS — Deer harvest totals were up dramatically across the state during the first day of the deer gun season on Monday.

In Columbiana County, hunters took 453 deer which was up from 419 in 2016. In Mahoning County, hunters harvested 209 deer which was up from 168 from the year before. In Stark County, 248 deer were taken which was up from 208 the year before. Carroll County also had a significant increase with 575 taken on the first day compared to 480 the year before.

Jefferson County was the only area county to see a steep decrease as 244 deer were taken compared to 365 a year ago.

Hunters checked 22,366 deer statewide which was up from 18,776 from the year before.

Ohio’s deer-gun season remains open through Sunday. Two additional days of deer-gun season (Dec. 16 and Dec. 17) have been added to increase the opportunity for people to hunt with firearms.
