Southern runs at Malone Invite

CANTON — The East Palestine girls look like they’re ready to make a run at the Columbiana County Cross Country Meet on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs won the Division III team title at the 49th annual Malone Invitational on Saturday.

East Palestine scored 40 points to get by Lutheran West, which was the runner-up with 44 points.

Alexis Cunningham led the Bulldogs by placing second in 21 minutes, 34 seconds on the 3.1-mile course at Canton GlenOak High School. The meet was moved from Malone University due to construction there.

Following her for East Palestine were Hope Figley in fourth, Faith Figley sixth, Heather Bishop 13th and Emily Zimmerna 20th.

Southern Local freshman Hannah Logston was third.

Minerva senior Mackenzie Scott topped 164 finishers in the Division II girls race. She had a winning time of 19:18. Minerva junior Nelle Yankovich wasn’t far behind in eighth place (20:03).

The Minerva girls were fourth in the team standings with 138 points. Lexington was first with 76, Dover second with 92 and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy third with 118.

Minerva junior Joey Stafford was fifth (17:00) in the Division II boys race.
