EAST PALESTINE — The Salem boys and girls track teams swept the 33rd annual Bulldog Invitational Track and Field Meet Saturday. But it was Lisbon junior Seth Stokes who stood head and shoulders above the competition.

Stokes set school and meet records in the high jump by clearing 6-feet-8 1/4, the best by a Columbiana County athlete in eight years.

It broke the school record of 6-6 he set last year that gave him a third-place finish at the Division III state meet.

Stokes also broke the Bulldog Invitational mark of 6-8 set in 2004 by Beaver Local’s Pat Woods, who went on to be the Division II state champ.

The winning jump of 6-8 1/4 in the best in Columbiana County since Crestview’s Jakob Leon jumped 6-11 to win the Division III state title in 2009.

The Salem boys successfully defended their team title in winning for the fourth time in nine years.

The Quakers totaled 110 1/2 points, followed by Mineral Ridge with 73 and McDonald with 65.

Salem featured five winners — Zach Murray in the 110-meter hurdles (16.76); Quinlan Rumsey in the 800 run (2:03.98); Jarod Cannon in the long jump (20-0 1/4); the 800 relay team of Josh Lehwald, Quinlan Rumsey, Lex Murray and Turner Johnson (1:31.81); and the 3200 relay team of Quinlan Rumsey, Dustin Griffith, Trey Double and Jackson Corbisello (8:25.71).

The boys field event MVP was Crestview sophomore Dominic Perry, who won the shot put (50-11) and discus (140-11).

The Salem girls ended McDonald’s four-year winning streak. The Quakers last won the Bulldogs in 2012 before McDonald started its run.

Salem used a solid showing in the field events and relays to collect 120 points, followed by McDonald with 85 1/2 and Beaver Local with 64.

Winners for the Quakers were Mary Double in the long jump (16-2 1/4); Lydia McKee in the high jump (4-10); Kati Johnson, Mackenzie Perkins, Katelin Chilton and Macey Austin in the 400 relay (52.91); and Katelin Chilton, Lydia McKee, Elizabeth Aukerman and Mackenzie Perkins in the 800 relay (1:50.71).

Rootstown’s Abby Moore won the shot put and discus to claim the girls field event MVP.

Running MVPs were Badger’s Megan Miller, who was first in both hurdles and second in the 1600 relay, and Mathews’ Kenny Wallace, who was first in the 1600 and 3200 and second in the 800.
