Bipartnership can be very productive

U.S. Sens. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Rob Portman, R-Ohio, along with U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va. can be fiercely partisan when they believe it is necessary to defend the people of our area. But they also know the value of working with lawmakers of the opposite party when that is best.

All three have been recognized for that ability to get along when it serves their constituents.

Each year, the Lugar Center and Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy rank lawmakers according to how well they work with members of opposite parties.

This year, Capito was rated seventh-best in bipartisanship in the Senate, with Portman ranked fourth-best. McKinley got the 10th best rating in the House of Representatives.

Good for them — and, more to the point, good for us, their constituents. We elected them to stand up for us, not their political parties. Clearly, all three understand that.
