Energy Express a plus for area

Energy Express continues to show its success, providing learning opportunities to area youth while on their summer breaks in an effort to assist in their education.

In existence in the United States for 24 years, Energy Express is designed to include education and nutrition, while providing a safe environment for participating pupils.

While not operating in West Virginia for nearly as long, the program has continued to grow and show its own success, now with two sites in Hancock County – Allison Elementary in Chester and Weirton Elementary – and two more sites in nearby Brooke County.

Energy Express is open to youth in grades 1-6, where participants read stories focused on a series of themes, as well as writing, art, drama and physical recreational activities and other projects, including those aimed at assisting the community. In Hancock County, for example, school supplies often are collected and distributed to students. This year in Brooke County, students collected donations to help flood relief efforts in southern West Virginia.

Community involvement also is key to the program’s success, with local residents and businesses making monetary contributions or volunteering their time, and some serving as guest readers.

Breakfasts and lunches are provided by CHANGE Inc.

Funding is provided through the West Virginia University Extension, West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts, the state Department of Education’s Office of Child Nutrition and other agencies, as well as local donations.

We congratulate all those involved in Energy Express on another successful year, and thank them for all of their hard work in helping our local youth in their education.
