Harold ‘Dean’ McKinney

1934-2025

Harold “Dean” McKinney, 90, a lifelong resident of Chester, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.

Born in Chester on Dec. 26, 1934, he was the son of the late George and Gertrude Miller McKinney. Dean was also preceded in death by his brother, Charles Edward McKinney; sister, Adella “Dud” McKinney; in-laws Albert and Bernice Reitter; and brother in-law David Reitter.

Dean graduated from Chester High School in 1952 and was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1954 to 1956 in the 1st Infantry Division band known as “The Big Red One” band.

He enjoyed working as a teacher within the East Liverpool school district at Westgate Middle School directly after college before his many years with Weirton Steel. Upon early retirement, he returned to teaching at East Liverpool High School.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, JoAnn Reitter McKinney; daughters, Marci McKinney, Deanne Hooper (Lance), Jodi Comm (Doug), all of Chester; grandchildren, Cooper, Parker and Kayler Comm; special niece and nephew Robin (McKinney) Kingsbury (Peter) and Shannon McKinney (Aida), along with numerous other nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Greg Reitter (Susan); and brother-in-law Richard Reitter.

Military service at Locust Hill Cemetery on a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in memory of Dean by Oak Glen High School Band, Oak Glen Middle School Band and John D. Rockefeller Career Center, care of Carpentry Class: Mirror Construction.
