Hugh L. Smith
1936-2024
EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio – Hugh L. Smith, 88, of East Liverpool passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Calcutta Health Care Center.
Hugh was born in East Liverpool on Jan. 7, 1936, a son of the late Benjamin H. and Margaret H. (Lamp) Smith. He attended East Liverpool High School with the Class of 1955. Hugh was a veteran of the Air Force proudly serving during the Korean War. He was a machinist at Homer Laughlin and also worked as the maintenance supervisor for Airco Welding. Hugh was a member of American Legion Post 374. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing softball and baseball. Hugh coached his son’s baseball team. He was an avid Pirates, Steelers and Ohio State fan. Hugh was a loving husband, father and pap.
Preceding Hugh in death were two sisters, Ruth Figley and Rose Boyd, and seven brothers, Willis Smith, Pershing Smith, Benjamin Smith, Fred Smith, Bensley Smith, Edward Campbell and Clyde Campbell.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, whom he married Jan. 28, 1960, Ruth Ann (Kittle) Smith; son Dennis Smith and his wife Alicia; daughter Connie Maltarich and her husband William; four grandchildren, Benjamin Smith and his companion Amber Baez, Andrea Maltarich, Blaire Brefeld and her husband Nick and Carly Maltarich; three great-grandchildren, Alec Brefeld, Parks Brefeld and Liam Burns; and two sisters, Betty Birch and Sylvia George and her husband James.
Family and friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Sunday where the family will be present from 1 to 5 p.m. Pastor Ron Boyd and Pastor Joe Boyd will conduct a service at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. Burial at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens where Tri State Veterans Burial Group will provide military honors.
Immediately following the service, the family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a time of fellowship.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Calcutta Health Care Center for the exceptional care they provided to Hugh.
