Warren Sweeney

Warren Sweeney

BLUEMONT, Va. — Warren Sweeney died Jan. 9, 2021. Warren was born, at home, Aug. 31, 1942, number nine of 10 siblings, in Folsom, W.Va. to John Christopher Sweeney and Amanda Samantha Hoskinson Sweeney.

He graduated high school at 16 years of age in 1959 and met the love of his life, Patricia Marlene Martyn, as a teenager, in Jacksonburg, W.Va., and they were married on June 30, 1962, in Baltimore, Md., while he was in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Belvoir. Warren served his country from 1962 to 1966.

During his life, Warren was active in the Newell (W.Va.) First Church of the Nazarene during the 1970s and served as the church treasurer and sang bass in the choir. In the 1980s he became a member of the Newell United Methodist Church and he and Pat renewed their wedding vows there. He was active in the Newell Civic Council and loved to help with the fish fries.

Warren retired, after 33 years, from Weirton Steel and he and Pat were able to enjoy some travel time. In 2003, Warren and Pat moved to Bluemont, Va. to be closer to their daughter, Natalie, and granddaughter, Amber. During his time in Virginia, he worked for Rosenthal Properties, for 19 years, up until July 2020 when he was finally retired. Never one to sit still for long, he found projects to keep himself busy.

Warren loved being a grandpa and spent a lot of time being the taxi driver for Amber. He became grandpa to Shane and Elliot and enjoyed their company as often as he could. Those who knew Warren would always get a good conversation that was surely to be long. He could fix anything and build anything and had whatever unlikely tool you might need to borrow. Warren was an excellent whistler and could imitate any bird. Warren was outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He never hesitated to help anyone in need and had few peeves in life except breaking the speed limit on Banjo Lane and swearing under any circumstances. He was a man of great, unwavering, faith and walked the talk.

He was preceded in death by siblings Sam (Mary) Sweeney, Laura Jane (Sonny) Canzona, Fred (Evelyn) Sweeney, Donald Sweeney, Bernard Sweeney, Bill (Hertha) Sweeney and Mary June Sweeney.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and two children, Natalie Sweeney of Bluemont, Va. and Brian Sweeney of New Cumberland, W.Va., and grandchildren, Amber Mitchell, Shane Sweeney and Elliot Sweeney; and brothers- and sisters-in-law Joe Sweeney of Morgantown W.Va., Jack (Alice) Sweeney of Bowden W.Va., Barbara (Donald) Sweeney of Jacksonburg W.Va., and June (Bernard) Sweeney of Olathe, Kan.; and many, many nephews and nieces who enjoyed their uncle’s great sense of humor and company over the years.

The funeral service will be held outdoors at 2 p.m. Jan. 17, 2021 at Warren’s home in Bluemont, Va. Condolences may be shared online at www.EndersandShirley.com, Berryville, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 216, Bluemont VA 20135 with a notation “in memory of Warren Sweeney.”
