Norman Frank Cox

MORGANTOWN — Norman Frank Cox, 92 of Morgantown, WV and former longtime resident of Newell, WV, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Abby Cox.

Norman was born in Chester, WV on March 26, 1928, the son of the late Cleatus Earl and Lilly Mae (Harvey) Cox.

He was a graduate of Wells High School, Newell, WV in 1948 where he participated in football and basketball.

After high school, Norm attended Art School in Pittsburgh, PA, drove cab for his family’s business and worked at Homer Laughlin Pottery. He served in the Army during the Korean War. After returning to Newell, he built the Shamrock Restaurant where he helped run the family business.

Norm married Betty Jane Blake on March 4, 1954 at the United Methodist Chapel in Winchester, Va. After a short time in Arizona, they returned to Newell and Norm built their longtime home on Lincoln St. He worked and retired from The Weirton Steel Co. after 30 years.

He was a faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church and participated in Newell Lion’s Club, and supported both Newell Colts and Oak Glen sports.

After retirement, he and Betty moved to Morgantown, WV to be close to their only grandchild, Ryan Cox. Norm enjoyed following WVU sports where he had the pleasure of attending a number of bowl games. He also enjoyed camping and fishing trips with his son and grandson, and the annual March Madness viewing party at Brad’s home.

Norm was a friend to both young and old and his wit and humor will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife Betty, his son Brad (Abby) Cox, and his grandson Ryan Cox, all of Morgantown, WV.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Ruth Cox Turner, and a brother Glen Keith Cox.

In accordance to his wishes, cremation services will be provided by Nixon Funeral Home.
