Waite seeks new term on appeals court

WAITE

Judge Cheryl L. Waite of the Seventh District Court of Appeals filed petitions seeking re-election Monday at the Mahoning County Board of Elections. Judge Waite is currently the Presiding Judge of the Seventh District. In her nearly 23 years on the bench, she has authored over 1400 opinions for the Court and participated in over 4800 other decisions.

Prior to taking office, Waite served as an Assistant Law Director and Acting Risk Manager for the City of Youngstown, where she handled appeals not only in various state appellate districts and in the Ohio Supreme Court, but appeared many times before the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Waite was also admitted to and filed briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court. Her extensive knowledge of the appellate practice was one of the things that led her to become a court of appeals judge. “I spent most of the early part of my career handling appeals. I felt that with my experience, I could best serve my community in the court of appeals, and I have been so grateful to the voters of this district who have elected and re-elected me four previous times to the Seventh District. I look forward to earning their continued support.”

In addition to serving several times as Presiding Judge, Waite was elected by appellate judges statewide to serve as Chief Judge of the Ohio Courts of Appeals Judges Association. She has been chosen several times to sit by assignment of the Chief Justice on the Ohio Supreme Court, most recently in May of this year. She also serves on the Supreme Court Rules of Practice and Procedure Committee.

The Seventh District is based in Youngstown and hears appeals from all trial courts in eight counties, including Mahoning, Columbiana, Carroll, Harrison, Jefferson, Belmont, Monroe, and Noble.
