Shootings keeps Hancock County deputies busy

NEW CUMBERLAND — Hancock County Sheriff deputies were busy Monday, investigating two unrelated shootings in Newell and Lawrenceville.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Richard Dale Nixon III of Grant Street reported to a 911 dispatcher that he had shot his brother, Christopher C. Nixon, of the same address, after he came at him in a threatening matter.

Christopher, 45, then left the residence of foot.

Upon arrival at the residence, deputies found the unarmed Richard Nixon, 49, was waiting for deputies’ arrival on his front porch and was taken into custody without incident.

Located a short distance away, EMS determined that the bullet grazed Christopher Nixon’s leg but caused no serious injury.

After securing a search warrant, detectives recovered a handgun, one spent casing, and the bullet from inside the residence.

Richard Nixon was charged with attempted malicious wounding and wanton endangerment with a firearm, both felonies, and domestic battery. The online case docket for Hancock County magistrate court shows that he had posted a $10,000 bond.

Christopher Nixon was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic assault and did not appear to have posted any bond per the online case docket.

Shortly after 2 p.m., while deputies were still processing the scene and arrests from the Newell incident, a second shooting incident was reported on Rural Lane in the Lawrenceville area of Chester.

A resident reported that her daughter’s ex-boyfriend came to the residence and fired several rounds before fleeing the area.

Quick follow-up from deputies (with assistance from Chester, East Liverpool and St. Clair Township police departments) led to information that the suspect fled to Ohio and abandoned the firearm within a garage in St. Clair Township of another unrelated person.

While deputies processed the scene on Rural Lane in Lawrenceville, they determined that their suspect had had discharged three rounds into a hillside adjacent to the residence from an AR-15 rifle. Other deputies had made their way to retrieve the weapon in St. Clair Township.

St. Clair Township Sgt. Scott Mick confirmed Tuesday morning that investigators were successful in recovering the weapon around 3:30 p.m. Monday from a garage in the 16000 block of Gipner Road.

The homeowner is not thought to be a suspect in the incident and was cooperative with investigators.

No one was injured in the second incident, which remains under investigation.
