Wellsville Board of Education approves new board member

WELLSVILLE –Wellsville Board of Education with an all-in-favor vote during Monday’s board meeting approved Shauna Scott as the board member to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Jarrod Grimm.

Prior to Scott’s approval, the board approved Grimm’s resignation effective April 29.

Scott’s appointment to the board was voted on after the board members met in executive session to discuss personnel matters and returned to the opening meeting.

Board members met in two separate executive sessions for personnel issues during the meeting.

They returned to the open meeting after the first one with no action taken.

Superintendent David Cappuzello said Grimm resigned due to moving out of the district.

During the new business portion of the meeting, the board approved monetary donations for the Jr. Class in the amount of $299.40 from the Grand March Door Donation; Daw Principal in the amount of $200 from Wellsville Terminals; Daw Principal Fund in the amount of $50 from Robert’s Funeral Home and Daw Principal Fund in the amount of $100 from Ferguson Tire.

They also approved the Wellsville High School graduating class of 2025 contingent upon meeting all state and federal requirements.

Many of the staff members present and board members expressed their sympathy in the death of CJ Talbert and offered to assist the family how they could.

During the finance portion of the meeting, the board approved the financial reporting including transfers and modification of funds, the treasurer’s report, the five-year forecast for 2025-2029, the renewal of the Schools or Ohio Risk Sharing Authority for the district’s property, fleet and liability insurance for fiscal year 2026 through McBane Insurance, a memorandum of understanding between the board and the Wellsville Teachers’ Association for exclusion supplemental salary schedule for the athletic director, and one for revision for the length of the school year, the renewal of Raptor Technologies, a three-year engagement compilation proposal with Julian and Grube for fiscal years 2025-2027, the fiscal year 2026 agreement with Access Council for application services and the NEOLA resolution to adopt special education model policies and procedures.

During the personnel portion of the meeting the board approved the non-renewal of certificated Staff Brandy Peterson, Language Arts teacher; the non-renewal of administrative staff Richard Shilling as high school principal/Administrator and Melissa Hudson as assistant high school principal/administrator, a reduction in force for Leah Prescott, business teacher; the resignation of Charles Kish, science teacher effective Aug. 31; and a one-year contract renewal for Linda Rolley, attendance coordinator.

The principals from all three buildings gave their reports on the good things happening in the schools and named their students of the month.

For Garfield Elementary, Principal Shelbie Householder announced May students of the month as Brayden Cornell and Garrett Lucas and June students of the month as Arya Murphy and Brantley Specht.

She noted that Donuts with our Darlings, which allows students to bring two adults and siblings with them to the event, is going well with 82 students and loved ones attending the first event for kindergarten. The event for the first-grade students will be May 27 and June 2 will be the date for second grade.

The second-grade students visited Daw Elementary to take a tour and eat lunch with the third graders.

The Map testing is complete and shows students’ scores are improving.

The kindergarten through second grade awards assembly will be June 2 and prekindergarten graduation will take place on June 3-4.

High School Student of the month for April was Gracie Dowling and middle school students of the month for April were Scarlet Watson and Devon Dalrymple and for May Rayleah Lamp and Corbin McDowell.

Testing results for students showed the seventh- and eighth-grade students showed gains in all assessments except one which they remained steady in.

Schilling presented to the board an award received by the high school from the International Exchange Students Program for the school’s outstanding support and hospitality toward exchange students.

The Wellsville Board of Education meets the third Monday of each month in the media center at the Jr. Sr. High School. The board typically meets at 5:30 p.m. but the June meeting will be held June 30 at 2:30 p.m.
